English - Essay Example In any war, the soldiers get paranoid; they are dispossessed of the sense of justice and morality, once they are part of the war. The solider will never be the same individual again.War is a terrible evil exercise for humanity. The victor is also a loser! Political leaders plan the war, but the soldiers fight it at the ground level. When one soldier is killed, the immediate family members suffer and the well-wishers go through an agonizing experience. The soldiers have no personal enmity and yet they are compelled to plan to eliminate each other. The only mantra for a soldier is, kill or get killed! Each day is a tough survival option for the soldier and no one at home is able to understand their predicaments. Tim illustrates a story of a soldier who brings his girlfriend to Vietnam. When she arrives, she is fresh and exuberant about the country that she is going to visit. But soon, the jungle life fascinates her; she loses attachment to her old city life. She disappears into the jungle. Tim explains this incident thus: "Tone? I didnt know it was all that complicated. The girl joined the zoo. One more animal--end of story." (O’Brien, p.107)Tim recalls a moment, how he killed a soldier who was walking down a trial. Tim threw a hand grenade at him and his face exploded†¦. He also narrates about the image of a young girl dancing outside her destroyed village, as American soldiers take the dead family away. ---One cries when one is sad; one doesn’t, when mad! Many such stories circulate. But, "Its safe to say that in a true war story nothing is ever absolutely tr ue." (O’Brien, p. 82) In Louise Erdrichs short story, "The Red Convertible," she communicates the emotional disturbances, war creates for a soldier and his relationships through symbolism of car between two brothers, Henry and Lyman. Their great attachment to the joint property, the symbol of their mutual affection during the pre-war days has vanished. Henry realizes that his

Sam 489 assignment 7 Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Sam 489 7 - Assignment Example A discussion on the temporary service changes or modifications that might be necessary after disaster recovery is also important. Disaster is unpredictable. Even the most prepared businesses or organizations are prone to the adverse effects of disasters. In case of disasters, various agencies aid small businesses in disaster recovery. Such agencies include U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Farm Services Agency (FSA), Small Business Development Centers (SBDC), and other state agencies (Haddow, Bullock, & Coppola, 2011). The Federal Emergency Management Agency aids small businesses in disaster recovery through the provision of food, rescue services, water, housing, electrical power, and other basic resources (Federal Emergency Management Agency, 2015). Indeed, FEMA provides temporary housing for small businesses like the gymnasium for a limited period. The agency also offers financial support to repair the damages caused by the disaster on small businesses not covered by the insurance (Wells Fargo Bank, 2013). FEMA also replaces destroyed buildings if such buil dings were not under any insurance cover (Federal Emergency Management Agency, 2015). The agency can also provide direct assistance to support a permanent or semi-permanent construction of businesses affected by disasters (Wells Fargo Bank, 2013). Ultimately, the agency offers financial support for other expenses and severe basic or business needs emanating from the disaster. Other services covered by FEMA include crisis counseling, disaster unemployment assistance, legal services, and special tax considerations for affected small businesses (Haddow, Bullock, & Coppola, 2011). The Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) also aid small businesses in disaster recovery. Indeed, SBDC offers confidential assistance to affected businesses after a disaster (Haddow, Bullock, & Coppola, 2011). The U.S. Small Business Administration funds Small Business

Structural Mechanical Faiulre Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Structural Mechanical Faiulre - Case Study Example During construction, certain difficulties came up resulting to a delicate, but flawed change of design. The change intensified the weight on the connection between the walkway tie roads and the support beams carrying the load of the second floor walkway and the fourth floor walkway. This design was not adequate enough to support the weight of the structure, as well as the weight of the spectators (Engineer). The investigations conducted also revealed that the change or alteration of the design by the contractors without consulting the engineers contributed to the structural failure. The failure was brittle in nature since it occurred as a result of one grain boundaries being stronger than the other. Additionally, the collapse of the structure also occurred with no prior deformation on the walkway. However, it is worth noting that the collapse could have been prevented. This could have happened if the contractors could have consulted the engineers of the structure before making changes on the design of structure (Engineer). Therefore, in order to prevent future structural failures of the same, Hyatt Regency walkway structural failure is used as a case study while training engineers and contractors on significance of engineering

Should disabled veterans get preferential treatment over better Assignment

Should disabled veterans get preferential treatment over better qualified candidates who are not disabled veterans - Assignment Example According to the utilitarian consideration of employment and discrimination, every individual should be given equivalent chances at employment; therefore, discrimination in the hiring process should be discouraged. With the prevalence of discrimination against the minorities in the society, affirmative action is seen as the redeeming factor, with the introduction of the Disabled Veterans Affirmative Action Program (DVAAP) to serve the rights of disabled people (FHWA, 2004). Affirmative action in this case refers to the series that seek to redress the injustices faced by minorities in society, and can involve laws or social programs that promote the justice of minorities (ACLU, 2011). Other affirmative action programs are those that involve women or minorities in the society, and in comparison with the DVAAP, these action programs can be concluded to be just as effective. Affirmative action programs consider all the rights of minorities in the society, and the main consideration is given to the disabled, women, and minorities in the society. The Utilitarian View of an affirmative action program is that all people in the society are entitled to equal rights, despite their disabilities or qualifications. According to the view, affirmative action programs guarantee that all individuals in the society are given the chance to progress and give the chance to all members of the society to progress equally. This is done by considering that the community functions as a whole, therefore, the parts of the community that pull back the development process should be helped. From the definition of the utilitarian affirmative process, it can be concluded that the DVAAP is a program that should be kept up in the society. Conversely, the deontological considerations of affirmative action programs dictate that the most qualified person for the job should be hired, regardless of their disabilities or minority effect. This means that the discrimination

Week 2 - Essay Example This performance management plan in healthcare is efficient in gauging the organization for success. This paper will explain the maintenance and development of a culture for outcomes oriented care within a healthcare organization. An organization-wide performance management plan focuses on the performance of an organization, a department or even the employees in the organization. This also applies in healthcare organizations in order to improve healthcare quality. In the past, the clinical decision support system was derived from an expert research. According to various sources, these systems have a significant impact on patients. The system developers were striving to create a program which was able to act just like a human clinician (U.S Department of Health & Human Services, 2009). Nowadays, these systems relate to a wide range of options. Furthermore, there are several types of the support systems in healthcare. Research asserts that these systems are effective in improving the quality of health services provided in a healthcare organization. For example, these systems have significantly lowered the rate of medication errors. This has immensely lowered the adverse drug effects on numerous patients. These systems also provide supportive diagnostic suggestions for some infections. Furthermore, the system is also able to predict some of the potentially hazardous drug interactions. The clinical decision support systems also have an impact on the structure of the organization. Research asserts that these systems have substantially lowered health care cost which is caused by the side effects presented by drugs (U.S Department of Health & Human Services, 2009). On the other hand, cultural competence in health care can be achieved by the hospital staff when they examine their own beliefs and values (Galloway, 2005). The nurses are usually advised to implement and evaluate culturally sensitive care in order to challenge prejudice and

Honorary members of the institution Essay Example for Free

Honorary members of the institution Essay It is with great pride and honor that I express my heartfelt appreciation for giving us, the students, and the guidance that we need to pursue with taking our dreams and for having been given the chance to enroll in an institution with competent instructors and high quality learning. The competence of the school is beyond compare greater than what I have first expected upon stepping on the floors of this prestigious foundation of education. Hence, with all due respect, I believe that what we have acquired in this institution, all the rationally beneficial fundamentals need to be harnessed on a larger view of human behavior. It is evident that there are skilled and outstanding students who are good at writing—academically able—hence possess dilemmas when it comes to public speaking, socially crippled and unable to open up their â€Å"social abilities† which I believe plays an important role as a university student. We, the students, are expected to raise the name of the institution with flying colors. In behalf of the future professionals intellectually crafted by this institution marvel, we are requesting for a summer camp which will cater several seminars on public speaking with the help of public relations and parliamentary procedure specialists so that we shall be thoroughly prepared when we finally face the bigger world that awaits our journey in life. The seminar will not only draw out the intellectual capacity of the students, but it will also enhance the students’ social skills and moral values by interacting with the other graduates. The series of seminars will also be charity work, wherein the proceeds shall be offered to deserving outreach organizations so as to start shaping the youth not only as students alone, but as public servants as well. We are asking for the administration’s benevolent support in pushing through with this activity since we believe that it is our teachers who can lead us to the brightest star there is. SQL Injection and Buffer Overflow Attack Detection

SQL Injection and Buffer Overflow Attack Detection CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION This chapter discussed about research requirement for this research. It discussed briefly the research background in section 1.1, problem statement in 1.2, research objectives in 1.3, research questions in 1.4, scope of research in 1.5, research elements in 1.6 and research significant in 1.7 1.1 Research Background The internet which is a free, supportive and self-sustaining facility reachable to hundreds of millions of people worldwide, have become one of important communication’s medium today. The greatest widely used part of the Internet is the web or World Wide Web (WWW). The Web uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to convey data through the Internet as HTTP is a well-known language over the Internet. There is a Web Browser that acts as the main door to the Internet if user wants to view the web pages in different websites. Web pages is a document that may contain text, videos, sound, images or any multimedia components created in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). In addition, to make the process of searching specific web pages easier, there is Uniform Resource Locator (URL) where it standardized naming convention for addressing documents available over the Internet or Intranet. As Internet become more and more significant, there are some individuals identified as hackers that have the ability to interrupt the peace of using Internet. For that reason, network security is required. Network security emphasis on securing networks from any violence or exploit especially from hackers and typically handles by network administrator on each organization that applies security policy. Thus, to ensure the three main goals of security which are integrity, availability and confidentiality is guarantee, network security become the main role to some kind of vulnerabilities in web application. Vulnerabilities can be referring as the flaws where attacker can take benefit by exploiting it to gain unauthorized access to their target. There are two of the most common web application vulnerabilities that exist in a web application are Structured Query Language (SQL) Injection and Buffer Overflow (BOF). SQL Injection is an attack in which the attacker inserts SQL commands into form or parameter values. It exploits the use of SQL query in the application. SQL Injection has become a predominant type of attacks that target web applications. The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) ranks it on top among the Top-10 security threats. Buffer Overflow is an exploit that can make the memory allocated to a certain application become massive. For example, an application expecting a five-digit postcode therefore the programmer only allocates enough memory for the perimeter. If an attacker enters more than five digits for example hundreds of digit, the application will end up using more memory than what it should. As of September 2010, 12 of the 20 most severe vulnerabilities ranked by US-CERT were Buffer Overflow related. There are a lot of web application vulnerabilities detection scanners existing in Internet. Either it free source or need to buy, there are more or less problems faced by these tools. The common problem meet by some of the scanner are false positive and false negatives. A false positive is when there is an error whereby a web application tested for is mistakenly found the vulnerabilities which actually there is none. Meanwhile, false negatives are the scanner does not found any vulnerability in a web application and telling user that the web is secure. However, actually the web application may have some vulnerability. Thus, by proposed a method for detecting the web vulnerabilities through searching for the suspicious and defined web vulnerabilities criteria, it will help the web application administrator to take a look and always standby in secure mode to avoid and secure mode for avoiding any attacks from the attacker. 1.2 Problem Statement Usually developers of a web application does not realize that their web application have vulnerabilities. They only realize it when there is an attack or manipulation of their code by someone. This is normal as in a web application, there are thousands of lines of code so, it is not easy to detect if there is some mistakes (Houghton, 2013). Nowadays lots of new hacker are born as the tools and tutorials are easier to get. According to Dougherty (2012), even though SQL Injection is very easy to protect against, there are still large numbers of the system on the internet are vulnerable to this type of attack because there will be a few subtle condition that can go undetected. Besides, in Buffer Overflow, although many methods have been proposed to address this problem, it mostly very high overhead involves considerable additional resources (Zheng, Zhou Liu, 2015). Therefore, a detection method for detecting the SQL Injection and Buffer Overflow while producing minimum false positive a nd false negative was proposed. 1.3 Research Objective There are two objectives that have been achieved in this dissertation: To construct a detection method that can detect SQL Injection and Buffer Overflow attack in web application based on acknowledged features and characteristics of the vulnerabilities. To evaluate the performance of proposed method in term of accuracy and efficiency by conducted two sets of experiments under laboratory testing environment. 1.4 Research Questions There are four research questions that have been addressed in this dissertation: Is it possible to employ a dynamic method for SQL Injection and Buffer Overflow detection in web application? What are the criteria used to detect SQL Injection and Buffer Overflow in the proposed detection method? What is the evaluation metrics used to measure the performance of the proposed detection method? How to measure the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed detection method? 1.5 Scope of Research This dissertation focused on the web application vulnerabilities which are more specific on SQL Injection and Buffer Overflow. This dissertation limited to: Detection of web application vulnerabilities which are limited on: SQL Injection Buffer Overflow A number of vulnerable website’s URL collected from: http://www.thetechnism.com/ http://pastebin.com/ For detection of web application vulnerabilities of SQL Injection and Buffer Overflow, the criteria used are: Get the URL of website Tokenize the URL Match the pattern with the matching criteria based on Boyer-Moore Algorithm Get the web application vulnerabilities The evaluation metrics that used in this dissertation are accuracy and efficiency 1.6Research SIGNIFICANCE There are two significances of this dissertation: This dissertation able to provide a method that can detect SQL Injection and Buffer Overflow attack based on Boyer-Moore String Matching Algorithm. This proposed detection method also able to generate the report regarding the level of vulnerability of the web application. The proposed method can assistance the web application developer or administrator to take any extra action to protected their application from being attacked by the unethical person outside the network to SQL Injection and Buffer Overflow attack.
